A little Update

This is just a post to simply clarify that an evaluation is being prepared for this task. Our group came to the decision that since we have acted like a professional film making team, why not finish like one.

We have a surprise to produce an Evaluation the way a top Hollywood screening would also be evaluated. With an interview. A professional set up will be made, with the Pelican Hunter Poster along side a chair or two for the makers of the production. In this case it would be our selves. We will produce questions we feel need to be answered and each individual member will upload a final video of their own evaluation for the Pelican Hunter

FEEDBACK

Our teachers produced a couple dozen questionairres, for each individual groups video

here are some of the feedback answers that students have given

Alex Mwanza aged 17
Bit too dark lighting in some of the shots, however it has all of the action genre conventions
The lighting could be improved because at some parts it would be too dark

Charlie hayford aged 17
Camera work-amazing
Editing-brilliant
Mise en Scene- darkness-action

Bethany Allison aged 15
Everything! The locations, camera work, editing...flipping brilliant-looks like a real movie

Henry Lee aged 17
Excellent on all levels...but speech was a bit poor

Teah Randall aged 17
I love how it looks like a real trailer

Brooke Sargent aged 15
Cut shots created tension-the trailer showed every aspect of its genre well

Daniel Sim aged 14
The best parts of that trailer were the editing and special effects. Very good it fitted the action genre

THE FINAL PRODUCTS

Here are all of my final products, including the joined production video

the two red themed gun shot text shatter posters, the character profiles, are the groups work

we all individually gave our ideas, but worked on it as a team

The Film time magazine front cover, is my individual ancillary task, as mentioned in previous posts, we all agreed to produce a magazine cover each, so we could portray our individual skills

There are two silver themed posters, which are also character profiles
This is a poster i produced, as an original idea, which then never went ahead, because we felt that the red themed ones looked better

I saw the images that were there, in a photoshoot album, and decided out of my spare time, to create another poster. The group members really liked how they were beginning to look so we decided to add them to our collection of posters

The accidental Miracle

When we started ancillary tasks, as you know, we began to produce a DVD cover, however we later learned, that there was no requirement to do this ancillary task
At the time it was near completion so the group just decided to add it to the massive advertising campaign, that is THE PELICAN HUNTER

It's been busy

You haven't heard from me in a while, because G.O.O.D production has been busy, with the finishing touches of editing, and finally...
...WE HAVE FINISHED!
Once we had finished all of our work including ancillary tasks, the school put on an ARTS evening, hosted by our media teachers.
Overall it was a very good evening, which turned out to be very professional
Much like a Seminar, each group had to individually talk about their video, and then step back to allow an a small audience to watch.
This allowed us as a group to understand our strengths and weaknesses, in both production and editing
Over all we became proud of our videos success, also we were astonished with the way it looks on a larger screen

During rendering, i had to go back and fourth with colour corrections, and brightness, for it became slightly darker when on the larger screens. Other than this minor speed bump, we finished with a great final product, which will shortly be uploaded

Progress

G.O.O.D has been busy, producing drafts and finalising our ancillary tasks, and soon posts will be made about the creation of my individual ancillary task, and the groups.
The tasks that we decided to do, as a group, were to produce individual magazine front covers, and a combined series of character posters for the trailer. Each poster would focus on the main characters from the film, with details about the release date of the film, and just to simply advertise the film.

Editing has been under way for some weeks now, and we are at the final stages of editing, where we are putting the finishing touches, on the sound, and the timing of clips.
As the lead editor, because of my experience in video i have sat down with my group and showed them how things work, in the programmes used, so they could edit and speed up the editing process.
I must say we are all overly proud of the outcome, especially considering the group members have had no video camera experience

Organising The Final Scene

I have just finished writing the list for the extras, that we want to be in our final scene.
The final scene, is a shot where Frank enters a room, and in there is Petrov with all of his highest ranked men, with weopons.
The shot then fades through Frank draws his guns, and shoots. The screen then cuts to a shot of the words PELICAN HUNTER, which is hit by bullet rounds. This is the end of the trailer.
Here is the list, and next to each name, is the prop they will be individually equipt with
People to do final scene
Paul                         revolver
George                      shotgun
Louis                         glock
Tayo A                       revolver 2
Tatenda                    bb pistol
Charlie                       revolver 3
Dan                            bb pistol
Harry                          (own)
Ayden                        machine gun
Craig                          not yet found
Peter                          not yet found

Also i have taken the time to make a little token that each extra/cast will be given, to notify them and remind them of the day and the things they need etc

How Much Longer

During the half term, a few more clips were recorded for the trailer, however we are running out of time, and still have a fair few of clips to do. Obviously with such little time, not everything will go according to plan, and on some shots, we will have to lower the efforts, however we have agreed to make sure that no scenes will go without carefull mise en scene, so a few days have been planned, where shots that will be taken, will be done in the same area, but in an area that matches the mise en scene.

We have realised that recording little clips at a time are pointless, so instead, we have planned two days out, that will provide atleast 10 final clips each. Major clips will be shot this week, also a photoshoot has been organised to photograph the final poster shots, of Petrov Kane and Frank.

The posters are simple yet effective, and the final drafts will be uploaded in the next post or two, as wil my magazine drafts, and the clips that were filmed through out the half term.

CURRENT PROGRESS So far, so G.O.O.D

At this stage of production, all of our members are working well on their individual Ancillary Tasks, with two close to completion so far. All that needs to be done is a jpeg image of the PELICAN HUNTER text that needs to be applied to all 3 magazine covers.
Soon a post will be uploaded of my final draft, and perhaps my final piece itself.
As extra credit, because we are so far ahead in our project, we also decided to add an extra task, of making a potential DVD cover, however this can only be properly finished when more filming has been done, because the screen shot images that are conventional of a dvd, need to be taken from the film itself, or photographed pictures from the day, in the action itself.
EDITING
Editing is taking place, and the clips have been added to three timelines, in three different programmes. Sony Vegas, Premiere Pro, and ofcourse after effects.
I as the lead editor have spoke to the group and have decided on using Sony vegas and after effects, for colour correction and special effects.
They were fine with this, and we made the decision that they sat down beside me and i showed them how it is done. Because of my experience, i was okay with this decision, and also because of my experience, i knew that by using mulitple programmes, the process speeds up, leaving us with more time for blogging, and filming if it needs to be done
POSTER
It was decided amongst the group to produce three magazine covers (one each) and a few posters, which would be created as a group. Another photoshoot has been organised for the posters, as we want new pictures, because we dont wish to use the same image throughout. Although using the same image, is a way of people recognising the link between all types of advertisment we produce, but there are other ways. The one way we are using, is through text.
The text being used is called UNREALISED and it being used throughout, that includes trailer text, posters, magazine and DVD covers.
All that needs to be done for our group  production, is to finish all recording, edit it, and finalise our products.

Edits and Timeline

This post will show you several clips from the most recent recording session that G.O.O.D undertook. The videos below are random selection from the multiple clips that were taken for eachshot.

also this post is just to inform you, that all of the clips that have been edited or are about to be edited, have been put into a timeline, using several editing programmes, along with sound effects, the trailer music and the trailer text also anything else required to make this trailer conventional and professional

This angle is conventional of an action film, as it creates a bold effect to the character, and gives him dominance. also it is an unusual angle, which interests the viewer.

This scene is a pan of all the weopons/props. This is commonly shown in films such as James Bond, to show how well equiped the individual is, even though in most situations, the hero is the underdog.
The underdog theory is common of almost every action film, other than war, however it is still used. It is used to create tension, and lead the audience into thinking that the hero can't win. In some cases the Hero doesn't win, and is killed, but justice will always take its course, and the villain will loose the war, even though they won the battle

as you can see between these two clips, the angles slightly orientate, however we thought that as it shows the same weapon just in different movements, it would look odd showing two completley opposite angles, and may cause confusion

this is a low angle, that is more often than not used to create dominance, however here it is used to create sympathy for the character, and because this scene is very dramatic, the distortion creates an even more dramatic effect.

A tilt may also be added in editing, to make this seem even more distorted

G.O.O.D has been busy

Over the past few weeks, G.O.O.D production has been busy, in filming and editing all areas of this task, from filming clips, to working on the Ancillary tasks such as magazines and posters.

On Saturday 28th January, a trip to a industrial site in Slade Green took place, and two domestic locations, where over 5 scenes for this trailer were filmed. Charlie Morgan (lead editor), Alex Leigh (lead Sound Editor), David Robson (main character). Charlie Morgan took charge in choreography, whilst Alex set up the equiptment, then we spoke to locals for the go ahead to film, and was on the way.
I took charge in most of the camera shots, however the group effort of all those there, was put into some clips, even by the actors themeselves, in order to see the best possible results for each clip.
This was a very successful day, and as you will see soon the clips turned out great. The mise en scene was also great, as was the lighting for that day, as it was very natural, but gave an orangey tinge to the original clips. This will however be changed in editing as the filter colour that this trailer has been using is a Cyan Colour Balance.

Below are a few behind the scenes of the day, so you can have a look yourself at the scenery we were working with that day, also the precautions taken to allow us to use particular props in a public place.

Contacting local law enforcement ( Metropolitan Police)

Putting up signs ( Warning, filming on site, prop weapons will be used, don't be alarmed police have been contacted)
Going Over the choreography

Considering this is an action scene, there are alot of shots, and a rough estimate shows that we recorded around 40 different shots, for 20 seconds of a clip. Here is one shot that shows most of the fight scene so you can get an idea of the types of angles used, and the choreography itself.

Filming Edits

Below is all the clips that have so far been shot and have been edited. Some edits are simple such as colour corrections however some are heavily edited in after effects. The lead editor, Charlie Morgan took charge on that particular clip, and showed the other members how it was done.

A typical romance scene, on a bridge, in a city, however the shot is what makes this conventional of a romance shot. A two shot is used, and the actors are composed, into the shape that appears almost like a love heart. I constructed the compostition also shot this shot, as i had pictured it in my mind, and this is how i wanted it, also it was better to take the shot into my own hands as i could portray what i was seeing.

I have told the group, that if they see a shot in their minds, dont hesitate to say so, and attempt it. Alex leigh has taken on board this comment, and has used it well in the action scenes, mentioning that it is conventional to use low angle shots, rather than high angle, as it looks better but also creates another P.O.V of action or a fight.

The Shard Stunt
The shard is the newest building that has been built in London, and we decided to do a shot of Frank repelling down the side of it. This of course was going to be edited using 2 separate shots one of the building itself, and then a green screen shoot of Frank repelling. The actions would be copied as it clearly isn't possible for this to be done.

When this was being edited, we decided to add an explosion. The reason for this is because we realised that our trailer had very few special effects like this, and as it was an action film, it demanded the need of an explosion so we added one. The entire explosion was edited, using plug ins for After Effects CS4 and making fire, smoke also the glass of the building was edited to make it seem as though it had actually shattered.

And here is the final product for the explosion, there are bits in this that will be cut out due to the editing not matching up to other areas of the clip, other than that we are all pleased with this outcome.

A Link will be uploaded of How i went about creating this, in Adobe After effects. Also the sound version can be found at 8246 Trinity Alexander Leigh, as he is the lead sound editor.

We both sat down when looking at this shot and applying the sounds, and debated about a stereotypical explosion. We actually selected multiple sounds rather than one, to get the full effect, such as glass shatters, glass falling, rumbling, shaking, fire crackling and wind.

Filming- News Report and Petrov at desk

This post will show you videos from the latest scenes that have been shot, with brief analysis explanations of how they went, and what shots were used etc.

News Report scene
This is a news report scene for the trailer. It was shot in a green screen studio, with natural lighting. The green screen was used so that images could be placed behind the reporter also it allows a News Reporting studio to be edited, without having to actually use one.

this shoot when rather well, and has been edited using simple after effects techniques such as basic position moving and rotation, also text is being added to create a realistic news scene.

These two shots, are very conventional shots, and all of the G.O.O.D production group were involved.
Our actor Georgina Kerwin was great here, and played the role of a news reporter very well. The shot is still, and a mid shot something that research showed to be conventional of a News Report, however the context of what is being said, is conventional of an action film news report, and that is why this shot works so well.
Here is a BBC news report. As you can see similar shots have been used, and the actress is conventional of a female news reporter, because their voice makes everything more dramatic, which is the effect we are going for.
All that needs to be added to our clip, is a slow zoom, as you can see in the one below. This zoom slowly builds tension, to the final line.

Petrov Kane ''looking forward to it'' scene

The shots you see here need to be edited, by adding a smoke filled atmosphere, as the actor is smoking. The shot however came out perfect, and the mise en scene is great such as the use of alcohol on the table, as this is stereotypical of a Russian Gangster.

the shot is a long tracking shot, to build tension up to the point of when the actor talks. It is a low angle, however it is subtle. This is to make the actor seem dominant in the situation

Poster Draft's

DRAFTS
These are some drafts recently produced by G.O.O.D's team. These are for the poster ancillary task. Previously in a blog you will see posters from the Film Kick Ass. They were analysed in depth, so that drafts like these could be produced. The layouts of some of these posters helped produce these drafts.

The Kick Ass posters were character profiles for each individual character in the film, and the same is being done for these posters. Taking each main character from the film, and creating a poster, quite simply with the words, PELICAN HUNTER, written in the background of each image.
These drafts will be sketched again, carefully, then they will be created using Photoshop.

My Magazine Front Cover Drafts

This blog is illustrating images for a magazine front cover, one of our ancillary task.
G.O.O.D has decided to do a magazine front cover instead of a web page. Each member of the group is going to create there own magazine front cover, and drafts are being sketched as this week goes on.
Here are my drafts for my front cover.

I looked at the magazine total film, and here are some of the layouts I looked at...

as you can see by all of these titles, the actor from the film each magazine is about, is often interacting with the title itself. This is common in most magazines, but especially in action films in a film magazine, as it creates action.
I will be mimicking these ideas in my drafts which will be further down this blog.

Here are my two drafts
on each of them are very conventional aspects of a film front cover
i have decided to title this magazine FILM TIME. The word time is in a smaller typeface within the word film.
As you can see the characters are interacting with the title, by overlapping it. This creates a 3D effect and it also makes the image seem life like.

Expendables Outfit -

Up until now, the only image of the outfit that FRANK wears in this fil trailer, is of sketches, and perhaps glimpse if you have seen the footage. Here is an action figure from the movie Expendables which allows you to see exactly the look that the team is trying to create.

The EXPENDABLES trailer text

G.O.O.D has been looking at a few ways in which trailer text for the word PELICAN HUNTER, can be displayed in the trailer. This clip from the Expendables Movie was found, a film very similar to this trailer, action adventure.

It is something that has been edited using after effect, it looks complex, however research is being undertaken of how it was done. This is something that is thought to look great if it can be pulled off, and G.O.O.D are hoping to achieve this.

Breaking News and The Shard Stunt

This post has relation to the last, that mentioned the new idea of the News Broadcast to alert the world of Petrovs escape from prison. Below is the script in which the News Reporter shall read. Props are being gathered such as a suit, a hand full of paper, a desk also a green screen set up will be made, so a scenery can be placed behind the lead anchor, as this is conventional of modern day news.

Breaking news
The highly wanted convict petrov kane, also known as the pelican. Has escaped.
Please, if you see this man, make no attempt to approach him
For his is unarmed but still dangerous

Okay there it is. Short but sweet. Also when the green screen recording takes place, as will another green screen shot, of a stunt that wasnt possible to do, because of its Extreme nature.

It is named the Shard Stunt, after the new landmark building to London, called the shard. It is a triangle shape based architectural structure. The building has a diagonal side in which the main character will be repelling down, also known as absailing. When this happens an explosion occurs, just above the actor. All the action in this scene will be edited, for the stunt ist actually possible, without equiptment and of course lack of common sense. It would be easier to edit something without any risks, that looks just as good.

Current Progress

At this current moment, G.O.O.D are working on a dialect script for one of the scenes. The scene is unlisted in the storyboard as it is a new idea, that came about just before christmas.

The scene is short, but will take alot of work. the scene involves a female news reporter to announce the news that the pelican, petrov kane has escaped. The reason a female was chosen, is because it adds a sense of fear and terror, as the womens voice is normally a soothing sound, however when that voice is traumatised, so is the viewers.

Currently a Layout is being created in Adobe After Effects, and research has gone into BBC news layouts, and channel 4 News layouts to see what is conventional and what is not.
